Timeless Teachings for Modern Life
Each quote in Rishi comes with a thoughtful interpretation to help you apply ancient wisdom today.
"Let right deeds be thy motive, not the fruit which comes from them. And live in action! Labour! Make thine acts thy piety, casting all self aside."
Interpretation: We have the right to our actions but not to their outcomes. This teaching frees us from anxiety about results and allows us to act with full presence. When we release attachment to rewards, our work becomes a form of meditation.
"The soul that with a strong and constant calm takes sorrow and takes joy indifferently, lives in the life undying."
Interpretation: True wisdom lies in maintaining inner balance regardless of external circumstances. When we neither cling to pleasure nor recoil from pain, we connect with our eternal nature that exists beyond the fluctuations of daily experience.
"Let a man lift himself by his own Self; let him not lower himself; for he himself is his friend, and he himself is his enemy."
Interpretation: We have the power to either uplift or degrade our own life. The higher mind can be the lower self's greatest ally, or its most dangerous adversary. Responsibility for spiritual growth lies within—no external force can do this work for us.
"He who in the sorrows of life is untouched by grief, unattracted by pleasure, freed from attachment, fear, and wrath—such is the Sage of steadfast mind."
Interpretation: Inner peace comes not from controlling external events, but from mastering our reactions to them. When we can witness life's ups and downs without being swept away, we discover a profound stillness that nothing can shake.
"Wherever Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, is; and wherever Arjuna, the archer, is—there shall be glory, victory, prosperity, and righteousness. This is my conviction."
Interpretation: This closing verse reminds us that when inner wisdom (Krishna) aligns with dedicated action (Arjuna), success naturally follows. True achievement comes from the union of consciousness and effort.
"Better one's own duty, though imperfect, than another's duty well performed. Better to die fulfilling one's own duty; the duty of another invites danger."
Interpretation: This verse speaks to finding and honoring your unique path in life. Comparing yourself to others or trying to live their dharma creates inner conflict. Your authentic purpose, even when challenging, brings more fulfillment than borrowed success.

Aldous Huxley
Author of Brave New World
"It was the first of books; it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us."

Ancient Wisdom,
Modern Understanding
Version 3.3 • January 2026
The Bhagavad Gita, written over 2,000 years ago, remains one of humanity's most profound texts on life, purpose, and inner peace. Yet its wisdom is often locked behind archaic language and unfamiliar contexts.
Rishi bridges this gap. Each of the 700+ verses (spanning all 18 chapters with 30+ themes) is paired with a modern interpretation—accessible, practical, and relevant to the challenges we face today.
Whether you're feeling anxious and seeking peace, motivated to take action, or lost and looking for guidance, Rishi's 10 mood-based filters deliver wisdom that speaks directly to your current emotional state. You can also journal your reflections, track your reading streaks, and let smart recommendations guide your spiritual journey.
The translations used are from Sir Edwin Arnold's "The Song Celestial" (1885), chosen for their poetic beauty and accessibility. Each verse includes 4 translation layers: Victorian English, modern paraphrase, original Sanskrit, and Romanized transliteration—plus definitions of key Sanskrit terms for deeper learning.
